Share your story about why you considered and ultimately had cosmetic surgery.

After 20 years of taking different types of medications for the treatment of severe asthma which can cause gynecomastia (male breasts), I decided to seek out a doctor to perform the surgery. Through the years as my breasts got bigger, I started to be very self conscious of it. I would exercise almost everyday and watched my diet with no success to decrease the size of my breasts. So, I got the courage to do something about it!

How did your friends and family feel about your decision to have a procedure?

The people around me never thought I had a gynecomastia problem. I always wore clothes that didn't accentuate it. I would say that they were all a little stunned when I told them about doing the procedure. Because of their lack of contact with people who had used the services of a plastic surgeon, I got the feeling that they didn't approve of me doing it. It was definitely a subject they didn't want to talk about.

How did 1800MySurgeon help you through the process of finding a qualified plastic surgeon?

The 1800mySurgeon service was so easy to use, just one phone call. I had already gotten an opinion from another plastic surgeon but didn't feel comfortable with him so I called 1800mySurgeon to find a second opinion and a different doctor. Again, it was so easy using the service to find the right doctor for my procedure. I also appreciated the follow up after my first initial contact with Christina, the person who gave my the referral for the doctor who ultimately did the procedure.

Can you describe your surgery and recovery?

The surgery took place on a friday at a facility that was very close to my home, just 20 minutes away. That was very important to me because I didn't want to travel too far for safety reasons. I felt that if anything went wrong with the procedure I'd only have to go a short distance to be seen by the doctor. The procedure went very well! I arrived at 9:00a.m. and the surgery began at 10:00a.m. as scheduled. Before I knew it the procedure was done and I was ready to go home. I didn't know what to expect about the recovery but what I experienced was exactly as the doctor described. He said I would be sore and to take a couple of days before doing any daily routines. I was very surprised when he also said that I could take a shower on Sunday, just 2 days after the surgery. Wow! I did take pain medication for 3 days but didn't need anymore after that. So, it's been an easy experience for me to recover and looking forward to getting back into the gym once Dr. Weil gives me the OK.

What advice would you give to another person considering your same procedure?

I would research "gynecomastia" to get a good understanding about the condition. It'll give a person a sense of knowing that there is a solution to resolving this hidden secret - that's how I viewed it all these years. Then, I would see at least to doctors before choosing a surgeon. I found it important to feel at ease with someone who was going to do take a piece of my body off of me. It truly is an elective procedure, not like all the other surgeries that I had done because they were needed. But, looking at the need aspect, I did need to do the breast reduction because I needed it emotionally, too!

How do you feel about your result?

I love the results and it's only been 23 days since the procedure was done. I can see that the results will be beyond my expectations. It's been a long time, over 20 years, thinking about what was happening to my body. I didn't know that the medications that were taken over those years would had given me gynecomastia. Now, I'm looking forward to buying cloths that fit, taking my shirt off in public, being touched without feeling self conscious of this previous condition, looking in the mirror and seeing a male chest, and knowing that I had the courage to take the first step and following through with the procedure.
