LAP-BAND® System Overview

The LAP-BAND® System uses an adjustable band which is designed to help you lose excess body weight. Losing excess body weight improves health conditions such high blood pressure and generally enhances quality of life. LAP-BAND® reduces the capacity of the stomach and limits the amount of food that can be consumed. The LAP-BAND® system is a silicone ring that is placed around the upper part of the stomach. Its inner surface is filled with saline. This produces a smaller stomach pouch that can carry only a small quantity of food. The food consumed slowly moves between your upper and lower stomach during digestion. This is how the weight loss occurs.

The adjustment of the band (the diameter) by the surgeon determines the rate of weight loss. If the band is too loose and not enough weight is lost, adding more saline reduces the size of the stoma in order to restrict the amount of food that moves through. On the other hand, if the band is too tight, the surgeon will remove saline and reduce the amount of restriction. For example, pregnant patients expand their band to allow enough food intakes for a growing fetus.
