Laser Liposuction

Laser Liposuction Overview

Laser liposuction works by using low-energy waves from a laser onto the body area where liposuction is desired. The laser waves enter the skin, weakening the cell membranes where the fat is found. The fat from the cell membranes then come out from the cells. After the laser takes place, a small incision is made and a cannula (small surgical instrument) is inserted, removing the fat from the body.

Laser liposuction is most commonly performed on women’s abdomen, hips, thighs, waist, breasts, arms and neck. The advantage to laser liposuction is that it does not leave tissue trauma such as conventional liposuction does, as well as minimal bruising, pain and swelling.

Having Realistic Expectations about Laser Liposuction

Being honest with yourself about how your body will change and how those changes will affect your life is important. Disappointment may happen, especially if you believe surgery will fix your life problems, save your marriage or cure depression. Having laser liposuction will result in body contouring. Body contouring may boost your self-confidence, but that won’t change who you are or the way other people feel about you.

Questions to Ask Your Prospective Surgeon

Once you’ve made an appointment for a consultation, take the time to prepare a list of questions and concerns you want to address with your prospective surgeon. The consultation is your opportunity to assess the surgeon as much as it is their opportunity to determine your candidacy for the procedure. Take your time, be thorough and know that you are never required to commit to a procedure or a surgeon because you’ve had a consultation, even if the consultation is free.

The different liposuction procedures involve different techniques. Some surgeons will use different techniques to achieve successful liposuction. You want to make sure that you choose a surgeon whose work you admire. You will be able to see the outcome of some of their surgeries by looking at before-and-after pictures. Have the surgeon thoroughly explain their procedure and why they value a certain technique more than others.

Make sure to speak to the anesthesiologist before you schedule a surgery, and inform them of any allergies or reactions you have to any medications. Make sure to tell both your surgeon and the anesthesiologist if you have any pre-existing medical conditions.

This list of information may help you compile your questions and may encourage you to do some further research on the many different aspects of laser liposuction:

  • Is laser liposuction the right procedure for me?
  • How is laser liposuction performed?
  • Where will the incisions be placed and will there be scars?
  • How can I prepare for recovery?
  • Is it possible to gain weight in that area after the procedure?
  • Do I have to follow strict dietary guidelines after the procedure?

If you’re consulting with a surgeon from 1800mySurgeon, you can rest assured that you will be meeting with a qualified Laser Liposuction Cosmetic Surgeon. If you already have a surgeon in mind, our qualified patient coordinators can also perform a background check before you schedule your consultation. Most importantly, always trust your instincts during the consultation. The success of your surgical experience will be based on how you feel about your surgeon, the surgery, your recovery and your result.

Laser Liposuction Recovery

Laser liposuction is known to provide a faster recovery than conventional liposuction, since it is performed with laser. If an individual has good physical health and does not smoke or drink, they may find that recovery is fast. There is also less bruising and bleeding with laser liposuction.

Your surgeon will require you to wear a compression garment for about 2 weeks after the surgery. It is normal to feel slight muscle ache and soreness. Patients typically return home the same day of the procedure, but need to make sure they avoid strenuous activity for up to 2 weeks.

Laser Liposuction Surgery Risks

Make sure your surgeon addresses all of your questions and concerns to your satisfaction. During your consultation, you will want to ask your surgeon about the following risks:

  • If I have a history of blood clots, am I at risk during laser liposuction?
  • What are the chances I might experience skin puckering or sagging?
  • What are the most common risk factors involved in laser liposuction
  • What are the risks for excessive fluid loss?
  • Is there any risk of muscle or nerve damage or loss of sensation?

It is important to remember that no surgeon can guarantee your satisfaction with laser liposuction nor can they deny any risk factors. No matter how rarely risks occur, every surgery carries a certain amount of risk, and you have to decide for yourself if your potential desired result is worth the risk.

Long Term Results of Laser Liposuction Surgery

Fat cells do not reproduce and for this reason, laser liposuction results are permanent. The remaining fat cells do expand, however, so it is possible for weight gain in other areas of the body, if diet and exercise is not maintained. The results will be evident in approximately 2 weeks but it will take a couple months to see the end results.
