Neck Liposuction Overview

Neck liposuction is a simple procedure that surgically removes excess fat from your neck reducing the appearance of a double chin or enhancing the contours of an aging, sagging neck. Many surgeons will tell you that if you want to look as though you’ve lost 10 lbs. or if you want to look 10 years younger, consider neck liposuction. Many people don’t realize that upon seeing someone, we look at the head/neck area first and often times don’t look further. Neck liposuction can make your neck look trim and youthful, adding to an overall young and healthy appearance.

If you feel trapped in turtlenecks, even in the middle of summer, neck liposuction can offer an enhancement that will have you shopping for scoop necks, V-necks and necklaces once your recovery is complete. A slender neckline can also give your stature the appearance of grace and elegance.

Having Realistic Expectations for Neck Liposuction

Having realistic expectations about how your looks will change and how those changes will affect your life is important. Disappointment may happen, especially if you believe surgery will fix your life problems, save your marriage or your social life, or cure depression. Having neck liposuction will help you look younger and possibly slimmer. Looking young and trim may boost your self-confidence, but that won’t change who you are or the way other people feel about you.

Questions to Ask Your Prospective Surgeon

Once you’ve made an appointment for a consultation, take the time to prepare a list of questions and concerns you want to address with your prospective surgeon. The consultation is your opportunity to assess the surgeon as much as it is their opportunity to determine your candidacy for the procedure. Take your time, be thorough and know that you are never required to commit to a procedure or a surgeon because you’ve had a consultation, even if the consultation is free.

There are different liposuction techniques; such as the wet technique, the super wet technique and tumescent liposuction. Many surgeons have their own style and methods for neck liposuction procedures. You want to make sure that you choose a surgeon whose work you admire and who has experience with facial surgery and liposuction. You will be able to see the outcome of some of their procedures by looking at before-and-after pictures.

This list of information may help you compile your questions and may encourage you to do some further research on the many different aspects of neck liposuction procedures:

  • Make sure you understand which liposuction technique will be used to achieve your desired results.
  • Ask about the incisions, where scars will form and if the scars will be visible.
  • Should excess skin be removed after liposuction? Is there an additional procedure if there is a significant amount of excess skin?
  • Let your surgeon know of any medications, herbal treatments or vitamins you take, and make sure to get a list of products to avoid before and after your procedure.

If you’re consulting with a surgeon from 1800mySurgeon, you can rest assured that you will be meeting with a qualified Board-Certified Surgeon. If you already have a surgeon in mind, we can also perform a background check before you schedule your consultation. Most importantly, always trust your instincts during the consultation. The success of your surgery will be based on how you feel about your surgeon, your surgery, your recovery and your result.

Neck Liposuction Recovery

Your neck will feel sore and possibly stiff for a few days after your liposuction. Medication can be prescribed to alleviate any discomfort.

You may experience bruising and swelling for a few weeks after the procedure. You will be give a compression wrap to wear for three to four weeks to help your skin adhere to the neck tissue and to keep your neck firm.

You will be able to return to normal activities in three to five days. You should follow your doctors’ orders when returning to exercise programs or other rigorous activities.

Neck Liposuction Risks

Any surgical procedure carries certain risks and the possibility of complications.

During your consultation, you will want to ask your surgeon about the following risks:

  • Is there a risk of infection along the incision site?
  • What is the risk of fluid retention or additional swelling?
  • How common are lumps, bumps, numbness, sagging skin or skin discoloration after liposuction?

It is important to remember that no surgeon can guarantee your satisfaction with neck liposuction nor can they deny any risk factors. No matter how rarely risks occur, every surgery carries a certain amount of risk, and you have to decide for yourself if your potential desired result is worth the risk.

Long Term Results of Neck Liposuction

Neck liposuction is permanent because fat cells do not reproduce in the human body. Skin and muscle tone are not affected by neck liposuction and this procedure does not harm nor improve those features. Because remaining fat cells will continue to expand, weight gain in other areas of the body is still possible without proper diet and exercise.
