REALIZE™ Band Overview

About 1.7 billion people in the world are overweight. Excess weight is a health concern globally, but it is important to note that the highest percentage of overweight adults is in the United States.

Living with excess weight can be a negative impact on ones physical, emotional, social, and financial well-being. Excess weight also links to serious life-threatening diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, depression and even cancer.

REALIZE™ Band is a procedure that results in significant weight loss, by allowing patients to consume less food and feel fuller sooner. This procedure uses a strong band that is composed of flexible silicone made from biocompatible materials. The adjustable REALIZE™ Band divides the stomach in to two parts – a small upper pouch and a lower stomach. This limits food consumption since the upper pouch can hold only about 4 ounces, or half a cup, of food. The Band can be later readjusted to make the stomach smaller or larger, depending on the rate of weight loss.

Having Realistic Expectations for REALIZE™ Band

Being honest with yourself about how your body will change and how those changes will affect your life is important. Disappointment may happen, especially if you believe plastic surgery will fix your life problems, save your marriage or cure depression. Having the REALIZE™ Band procedure will result in significant weight loss. Weight loss may boost your self-confidence, but that won’t change who you are or the way other people feel about you.

Questions to Ask Your Prospective Surgeon

Once you’ve made an appointment for a consultation, take the time to prepare a list of questions and concerns you want to address with your prospective plastic surgeon. The consultation is your opportunity to assess the plastic surgeon as much as it is their opportunity to determine your candidacy for the procedure. Take your time, be thorough and know that you are never required to commit to a procedure or a plastic surgeon because you’ve had a consultation, even if the consultation is free.

REALIZE™ Band may involve different techniques. You want to make sure that you choose a plastic surgeon whose work you admire. You will be able to see the outcome of some of their surgeries by looking at before-and-after pictures. Have the plastic surgeon thoroughly explain their procedure and why they value a certain technique more than others.

Make sure to speak to the anesthesiologist before you schedule a surgery, and inform them of any allergies or reactions you have to any medications. Make sure to tell both your plastic surgeon and the anesthesiologist if you have any pre-existing medical conditions.

This list of information may help you compile your questions and may encourage you to do some further research on the many different aspects of REALIZE™ Band:

  • What are the benefits of REALIZE™ Band?
  • How can I prepare for REALIZE™ Band surgery?
  • What type of Anesthesia will be used?
  • How often will the Band need to be readjusted?
  • Will I be able to become pregnant?
  • What are the costs involved in REALIZE™ Band surgery?

If you're consulting with a surgeon from 1800mySurgeon, you can rest assured that you will be meeting with a qualified Board-Certified Surgeon. If you already have a surgeon in mind, our qualified patient coordinators can also perform a background check before you schedule your consultation. Most importantly, always trust your instincts during the consultation. The success of your surgical experience will be based on how you feel about your surgeon, the surgery, your recovery and your result.

REALIZE™ Band Recovery

Recovery time varies from patient to patient, but full recovery from REALIZE™ Band surgery may last six to eight weeks. REALIZE™ Band is a major operation that may require lengthy hospital stay and about 3 to 5 weeks of rest at home. Most patients wish to have their first adjustment when they have eaten solid food for a whole week. Weight loss will become evident 12 to 18 months after the REALIZE™ Band procedure is performed.

REALIZE™ Band Surgery Risks

As with any surgical procedure, the REALIZE™ Band procedure carries potential risks and complications. The risks associated with this type of surgery include bleeding, pain, shoulder pain, pneumonia, infection, and injury to stomach, among others.

REALIZE™ Band can be a lengthy procedure, which increases the risks of complications from anesthesia. Make sure your plastic surgeon addresses all of your questions and concerns to your satisfaction.

During your consultation, you will want to ask your surgeon about the following risks:

  • What are the chances of infection?
  • What are the risks of death during surgery?
  • Will I have nutritional deficiencies?

It is important to remember that no surgeon can guarantee your satisfaction with REALIZE™ Band surgery nor can they deny any risk factors. No matter how rarely risks occur, every surgery carries a certain amount of risk, and you have to decide for yourself if your potential desired result is worth the risk.

Long Term Results of REALIZE™ Band

Most REALIZE™ Band patients report high levels of satisfaction with their results. REALIZE™ Band patients usually lose weight in small increments, such as 1 to 2 pounds a week or 4 to 8 pounds per month. They make healthy food choices and exercise to maintain their body weight.
