Local Vs. General Anesthesia

What are the risks and recovery differences between local anesthesia and general anesthesia?

These days, general anesthesia has been safer than ever. That said, there are risks involved. The more common inconveniences, like nausea or headaches postoperatively, can be treated preemptively, but there are no guarantees that one will not experience them.

General anesthesia allows the surgeon to focus on his portion of the surgery. The anesthesiologist can then focus his/her skills on vital signs, airway management, and pain control.

Local anesthesia is the best option for minor procedures as it avoids the inherent risks of a general anesthetic and the potential for postoperative "hangovers."
