Get a New Outlook with Eyelid Surgery
Excess skin and loss of elasticity in the eyelids commonly occurs as we age. Fatty tissue often starts forming under the skin in the eyelids, giving us an older, tired appearance. Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure that removes excess skin, muscle or fat from the upper or lower eyelids.
Eyelid surgery improves the look of droopy upper eyelids, baggy under-eye skin and sagging eyelashes that could cause impaired vision. While eyelid surgery treats drooping eyelids, it does not treat the eyebrow region or improve the appearance of wrinkles. That’s why eyelid surgery is often performed in conjunction with brow lift of facelift.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, during eyelid surgery, the incisions are made along the creases of the upper and/or lower eyelids and excess skin, fat and/or muscle are removed from the eyelids. The procedure is generally performed under local anesthesia and done in an outpatient surgery center or office. Your surgeon will recommend the best anesthesia for your needs.
Your surgeon will advise you on the recovery process. Generally, patients feel pain and discomfort after the surgery and use the pain medications recommended by their surgeon. Normally, cold compresses, eye drops and plenty of rest are always recommended for a speedy eyelid surgery recovery.
When considering an eyelid surgery procedure, it is critical to find and consult with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon who has been properly trained and has the necessary credentials.
A Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon can also show you before and after photos of eyelid surgery. Taking a look at these pictures can give you a better sense of what your individual needs are and what you can expect to look like after the surgery.
