Healthy for Plastic Surgery
A breast augmentation, tummy tuck or face lift can change a person’s appearance, but it won’t drastically change a person’s life. While it’s true that elective surgery is at an all-time high, consumers need to be weary that it might not be the right option for them, especially if they aren’t at their best physical and psychological health.
Having realistic expectations about your elective surgery is of paramount importance. Surgery cannot make you 15 years younger or alleviate you of all your life problems. There is such a thing as being a bad candidate for surgery and some Board-Certified Surgeons will advise patients on other options if surgery is not the right way to go.
A good candidate for elective surgery lives a healthy lifestyle and has complete knowledge of the possible risks and complications of the procedure(s) they wish to have. Healthy candidates for plastic surgery usually are:
- In good physical shape
- Not overweight
- Involved in regular exercise
- Non-smokers
- Not heavy consumers of alcohol and caffeine
- Emotionally and psychologically stable
- Supported by their close friends and family
- Well aware of the costs, recovery and risks of surgery
It is also important to eliminate any health concerns before deciding on elective surgery. Speak to your primary physician or a specialist if you have more than one of the following health problems:
- Heart disease
- Lung disease
- Obesity
- Diabetes
- Hypertension
- Bleeding disorder
- Depression
- Severe allergies
- High cholesterol levels
