Post-Surgery Survival Guide
It’s always good to be prepared, especially after having surgery. With some essential elements, you’ll be well on your road to recovery. Planning ahead can make your recovery smoother by alleviating added pain and stress.
Most plastic surgeons advise patients on how to take care of themselves during the post-operative period. Depending on the procedure, a patient might have to make changes in their diet and lifestyle. Others will have to stay in bed for a week or two. No matter what is required of you, getting organized and preparing yourself for recovery can ensure a more effective recovery.
Here is a list of things to keep handy for the recovery process:
Ice packs
Gel packs, bags of ice or frozen vegetable packs do the trick. These will help you relieve sore muscles by soothing and reducing inflammation.
Gauze pads
In case of bleeding, sterile gauze pads are a good way of keeping scars free from infection. Delicately pressing them against scars can stop bleeding and they are also a good alternative to band-aids, which can be painful when removing.
Sleeping aids
Getting sleep is an important way to recover. It helps patients heal by restoring energy and relieving pain and fatigue. To get a good night’s rest, taking natural sleeping aids are very useful.
Bed sheets and pillow covers
Stocking up on sheets and covers is a good idea, in case you need to change your bedding frequently.
Washcloths
Use them to clean wounded areas, soothe dry kin and clean dirt and oil.
High fiber diet or laxatives
Pain medication often causes constipation. You may need to increase your fiber intake by taking stool softener or laxatives to keep a balance in your body.
Detachable showerhead
If you are restricted in your movements or it’s not easy for you to stretch, a hand-held showerhead can make your shower experience much easier.
Anti-stress remedies
You’ll be required to get lots of rest during your recovery. To help get your rest, prepare your favorite anti-stress remedies. Aromatherapy, watching your favorite movie, soft music, warm tea or reading a good book will help you reduce stress and provide effective relaxation.
Soft Foods
Avoid overworking the digestive system by eating soft foods that are high in energy. Oatmeal, rice, steamed veggies, smoothies and juice are great sources.
