Am I a Good Candidate for Tummy Tuck?

Tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is often performed to achieve a smoother, flatter looking tummy. Diet and exercise often result in a soft abdominal area, which is why many people find that having their abdominal muscles tightened is a benefit that tummy tuck surgery offers. However, patients should carefully consider the following:

Typically, good candidates for tummy tuck include:

  • Patients who have excess or sagging abdominal skin
  • Patients who have an abdomen that is not in proportion with the rest of their body
  • Patients who have weakened or relaxed abdominal muscles
  • Patients who have excess fatty tissue at the abdomen
  • Patients who are in a good physical shape
  • Women who are experiencing lax abdominal muscles after pregnancy
  • Patients who are experiencing sagging or loose skin due to the natural aging process
It is important for patients to remember that the main purpose of tummy tuck surgery is to change the shape of the body and that it does not result in weight loss. In other words, tummy tuck procedures are performed to enhance body shape, not create a perfect body. Patients need to set realistic expectations for themselves and be careful not to think that having tummy tuck will be an answer to dieting and exercising.

Consult with your Board Certified Surgeon about the advantages and disadvantages of having a tummy tuck. Your  surgeon will advise you on your options, inform you about the risks, recovery time and provide you details about the procedure, so that you will be sure it is the right procedure for you. Patients should also keep in mind that with any major surgical procedure, recovery times may be lengthy and it may limit daily routines and activities.

It is a good idea to speak to a Board-Certified Surgeon about tummy tuck or about alternatives, to make sure you go through the procedure that’s right for you. Board-Certified Surgeons have the necessary knowledge and training background in dealing with tummy tuck and other cosmetic surgery procedures.
