Is Buttock Augmentation Right for You?

Do you ever look in the mirror and feel unhappy with the shape and size of your buttocks? Do you often wish they were in proportion with the rest of your body and fit in with the size of your breasts? If so, a buttock augmentation or buttock enlargement may be the right procedure for you.

Buttock augmentation can help you enhance the size, shape and definition of gluteal muscles in the buttocks area. Women particularly ask for the Jennifer Lopez "look" that buttock augmentation can provide.

In the past, buttock augmentation was performed by adding silicone implants to each cheek. Today, plastic surgeons use a method called “fat grafting” to perform the procedure, which allows faster surgeries, fewer complications and shorter recovery times. An added benefit to the procedure is the use of liposuction on other areas of a patient’s body. With the fat grafting technique, patients can remove fat from other unwanted areas of their body and use it for their buttocks.

It is important to keep in mind that fat grafting requires available fat in other areas of a patient’s body for transfer. It is recommended for petite patients to consider traditional silicone implants as an alternative. Also, approximately 30% - 35% of buttock augmentation patients require a second fat grafting procedure to the buttock since sometimes the fat deposits are quickly absorbed.

Good candidates for this procedure are women that lack definition in their buttock area, want to enhance their appearance and boost self-confidence, want to balance the look of their body and desire an aesthetic backside.

A prospective patient should also set realistic expectations for the results and should not anticipate perfection. Patients considering buttock augmentation, or any other surgery should do so to satisfy their own needs. A board-certified plastic surgeon can be an excellent resource for discussing your intentions for surgery and possible results. Seeing a board-certified plastic surgery for a consultation can also help determine if buttock augmentation is right for you.
